Dodge

We moved to a farm a few months ago, and we have quite a distance of gravel farm road to travel every day to get to the main road. It is a joy, because of all the wild life we see on our drive. Some of the more remarkable animals we’ve seen are duiker, a pair of Spotted Eagle Owls, Long Crested Eagle, even a Black Backed Jackal.

However, we get the most laughter from watching the silly fowls. Be they partridges or guinea fowls, they really are not very gifted decision makers. They will scurry along just ahead of our front wheel at greater and greater speeds, eventually sputtering and desperate, before it finally occurs to them that their chances to outrun the car are just not great, and they’d be better off dodging sideways to get out of our lane and into the long grass that hides them.

Better still would be to use their wings and fly. They almost never, ever do that. They will try to outrun before they dodge sideways, and they will dodge sideways before they fly. What utterly silly and unwise choices.

Their stress levels must be through the roof, they get so anxious, and use up all their energy.

And then suddenly I saw it. We do the exact same thing. We get into some kind of sinful habit. Then we try to outrun the enemy. As if that were possible, and we all think we are invincible. It happened to that person, but I’m in on control of this, the car won’t squash me! Instead of just dodging sideways, get out the sin lane, to where you are hidden in the grass. And, raise your children there. The road is a smoother walk with an open lane, but you and your children will grow some strength navigating the grass tufts, stones and rocks. You will overcome obstacles with Jesus, while remaining hidden from the enemy.

Better still, once your wings have grown strong enough, you’ve matured in Christ and know more of the Word, and are led by the Holy Spirit, surrender fully, and fly! Surrender to Father God and together with Jesus Christ, let the Holy Spirit give you supernatural ability to overcome.
